The gap between a £120 supermarket-branded shelter and a £400 flagship is not comfort - it is condensation, wind rating, and whether the poles bend on the first sideways gust off a Lincolnshire pit.

What actually matters when buying bivvies
The specs that decide whether the kit lasts a decade or lets you down mid-session. Everything else is marketing.
Hydrostatic head
Look for 5,000 mm minimum on the flysheet and 10,000 mm on the groundsheet. Below that, prolonged UK rain will find its way through eventually.
Pole material
Aluminium alloy (7001-T6) is the standard for anything above £180. Fibreglass poles are only acceptable on true budget shelters used for occasional summer sessions.
Two-skin construction
A separate outer fly with an air gap manages condensation properly. Single-skin bivvies rain on you from the inside on cold nights, no matter how expensive.
Peg pattern
20+ peg points on the ground line and storm-strap loops on the ribs. Kit that only pegs at the four corners will lift in any real wind.

Not every piece of bivvies kit on the UK market is worth your money. These are the sub-categories we'd walk past:
- Any bivvy sold with the word "quick pitch" but no pole diameter listed - usually 8 mm fibreglass that will not last two seasons
- Camo-print supermarket brands that use PU-coated polyester rated at 2,000 mm HH - you will get wet on the first heavy night
- "3-4 man" bivvies at carp fishing pricing - pitching footprint is often too big for UK swim sizes
Common questions
Do I need a wrap or overwrap for winter?
Yes, from October onwards. A wrap adds a second insulating air gap that cuts condensation dramatically and adds 3-5 degrees of felt warmth inside. Most flagship bivvies have a matched wrap sold separately for £120-180.
One-man or two-man?
Buy a two-man even if you fish alone. The extra internal space swallows tackle, wet clothing and a bedchair without cramping you. The weight and pack size difference is small on modern bivvies.
How long should a bivvy last?
A mid-range aluminium-pole bivvy used 40-60 nights a year should last 8-12 years if you dry it after every session and re-proof the flysheet every 2-3 years. Fabric UV degradation is the usual death, not tears.
