The best unhooking mats & cradles in the UK

Fish-welfare kit - flat mats, cradles and floor-fill mats.

Mat choice matters more than most anglers realise, both for fish welfare and for reducing hook holds damage. A flat foam mat is the entry point; a floor-fill (raised-sides) mat protects a lively fish; a proper cradle removes the risk of a carp bouncing off onto hard ground entirely. In 2026 most syndicate rules require a cradle for fish over 20 lb.

What actually matters when buying mats

The specs that decide whether the kit lasts a decade or lets you down mid-session. Everything else is marketing.

Padding thickness

50 mm minimum on a flat mat, 70 mm+ on a cradle. Below that, a fish bouncing off a hard mat can damage scales and slime coat.

Waterproof underside

Absolute must - a mat that soaks through will lift dirt and grit into the fish's flanks every time it lands on the ground beneath.

Weep holes

Look for reinforced weep holes that let water drain from the padded top. Without them, a wet cradle stays wet and grows mould inside a month.

Size

Match to the venue's biggest realistic fish plus 20 cm. A 100 cm mat is too small for anything over mid-thirties.

How much should you spend

Four price bands, four different levels of what you're buying. Pick by what you can afford to sacrifice, not what you'd like to have.

Common questions

Flat mat or cradle?

Cradle for anything over 15 lb. The rigid frame stops a lively fish rolling off onto the bank, and modern cradles fold to roughly the same pack size as a folded flat mat.

How do I clean it?

Rinse with lake water at end of session, dry fully at home before storage, occasional wipe with mild antibacterial (no bleach). Never dry in direct sun for extended periods - the foam UV-degrades.
